Jessica Ennis Wins Gold

Jessica Ennis, Sheffield's very own heptathlete has been given huge praise after her sensational medal-winning performance this weekend. Sheff Council leader Julie Dore said that, "The whole of Sheffield is buzzing with excitement and is filled with pride for our Olympic champion, Jessica Ennis," how right she is. I am sure many Sheffielders have been supporting the local hero throughout the Olympics and saw her through the epic victory beating Jessica Zelinka and Tatyana Chernova in the Womens Heptathlon.

Her first coach Mick Thompson had stated that "You can’t get better than this,”  when interviewed by one of The Stars reporters when the event had finished. After her disappointment of having to miss the Beijing Olympics in 2008 due to stress fractures to her right ankle she fought on to give us another gold medal, in perhaps the best performances of our Olympic history, so far...

What a mess!

Stannington Carnival cancelled? Yes, for the first time in 40+ years the carnival was cancelled, called off by the Council for health and safety reasons following a month of rain on Friday. The park was filled with irony on Saturday, as the park was feeling the warmth of the summer sun yet not a stall was in site. There is some good news though, the carnival has been rescheduled
for the 22nd of September and hopefully it will not be a total wash-out.

The Carnival

Yet again more information about the carnival. Being the biggest annual event for the Stannington village, Stannington Carnival see's thousands of people flood from the city and beyond, to see the vast variety of stalls, costumes and performances brought together for this charity event.

With over 120 stalls filling two huge fields and the Lomas Hall, the carnival has something to offer for everyone. With massive plots, visiting a stall is easier than ever as you have plenty of space to view the items for sale. The Carnival offer a huge variety of entertainment from bouncy castles or paint balling and even classic cars you are sure to never be left out!

Unfortunately there is still no word on the parade but im sure it will be as good as previous years. Remember to make sure you are free on the 7th of July at 12pm when the carnival kicks off. Their is a suggested donation of £1 for adults entry and it goes direct to The Stannington Carnival Organisers (SCOFF) and all profits gets given to charities and local groups which enrich and enhance the life of residents nearby.

Chief's park visit

Hello everyone! The Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police visited Stannington park earlier today to meet the volunteers of Action for Stannington. Members of Action for Stannington and David Crompton discussed several subjects for example; past and present funding for the park,  problems the carnival organisers are facing and whether there is future for the Community support officers. He was also took on a detailed walk around the park and told the Volunteers of how well kept the area was, much to the appreciation of the organisation and the residents.

David Crompton assured the group and the Community Support Officers's present, that their were no jobs at risk by the cutbacks enforced, also that they are highly likely to get more police powers and therefore have a higher efficiency while giving the same, if not better, service to the local community. Also the carnival might not be having its usual parade. The organisers were told that members of the police force are not going to allow the road to be closed. This could mean that the parade is significantly shorter, but despite this, is looking to be bigger than ever!
